ASA-Associate of the Society of Actuaries

An Associate of the Society of Actuaries has demonstrated knowledge of the fundamental concepts and techniques for modeling and managing risk. The Associate has also learned the basic methods of applying those concepts and techniques to common problems involving uncertain future events, especially those with financial implications. The Associate has also completed a professionalism course covering the professional code of conduct and the importance of adherence to recognized standards of practice. Associates who have been members of the SOA for five or more years may also vote in Society of Actuaries elections.

To attain the ASA designation, one pathway is for a candidate to successfully complete the requirements shown below, and have the Application for Admission as an Associate approved by the SOA Board of Directors. Requirements include examinations, an e-Learning course, validation of educational experiences outside the SOA Education system (VEE), and a professionalism seminar.

The exams to do in order to attain ASA include:

  • Exam P – Probability
  • Exam FM–Financial Mathematics
  • Exam MFE–Models for Financial Economics
  • Exam MLC–Models for Life Contingencies
  • Exam C–Construction and Evaluation of Actuarial Models
  • VEE Economics
  • VEE Corporate Finance
  • VEE Applied statistics
  • Fundamentals of Actuarial Practice (FAP) e–Learning Course
  • Associateship Professionalism Course (APC)

VEE-Education Validation by Educational Experience

You may apply for VEE candidate credit provided the following conditions have been met:

  • You have passed at least two actuarial examinations with the SOA or CAS
  • The course/option being submitted for VEE credit has been approved and is listed in the Directory of Approved Courses and Alternate Options.

    VEE Candidate Credit applications for partial credit will not be accepted (e.g., an already approved regression course may not be submitted alone, but must be accompanied on the same application by an approved time series course). Applications for VEE candidate credit can only be submitted after all requirements for that topic are completed.

Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst (CERA) Requirements

To attain the CERA credential, a candidate must successfully complete the requirements shown below. In addition, candidates who have the Application for Admission as an Associate approved by the SOA Board of Directors will be granted membership as an ASA.

Requirements include examinations, an e-Learning module, validation of educational experiences outside the SOA Education system (VEE), and a professionalism seminar.

All exams as listed above in ASA(except MLC and VEE Applied statistics)and an exam:

  • Enterprise Risk Management Exam
  • Enterprise Risk Management Module

REQUIREMENTS TO SIT FOR CT1
The exams are be based on the syllabus and core reading for the subject, and the ActEd course material is t he main source of tuition. However, one wants clarification on some points or want to read further then you may find it useful to consult different texts suggested to get a different viewpoints.
